Homebound!

We're heading back to Iowa!

Brie had her baby last week🙌 We need to go cuddle Olivia Marie!

Evie is obsessed with babies. She asks for "baby sissy" (baby Lucy) about 20 times a week and she carries three baby dolls and a stuffed elmo all over the house. Although, I am curious to see how she reacts to a newborn. I know she will be in heaven playing with Mira, Elena, and all their toys😂

The only downside will be the weather... I've acclimated to PNW winters. I don't think I can handle below freezing temps anymore. Brady and I realized we don't even own winter coats anymore lol.

Twenty Months

I can't believe she's nearly two-years-old! I'm still loving the toddler stage. New developments every single day.
Evie is full of spunk and giggles and tantrums. She wakes up every morning full of energy and ready to start her day. She's a social butterfly. She literally yells "HI!" at people across the street. It's half adorable and half embarrassing. She loves to play outside and climb on everything. People at the park always assume she's older because she's so comfortable on all the equipment.

She still loves dogs and babies. Her most frequent request is "my baby" which translates to more baby. She always wants to watch videos of herself or other babies. I'm very mindful to keep my phone out of sight, otherwise I know she start begging for "my baby."

A few new developments... she is no longer afraid of the vacuum. I'm sad about this because she used to run into my arms and cuddle every time Brady got the vacuum out. Now, she says "hi vacuum." She also recently started hating ducks. I don't know what happened, but she never wants to see them at the park and when she does she yells at them to "go away."

My favorite thing at the moment is when Brady and I pretend to be scared and Evie tells us "it's ok!" If we continue acting scared then she'll get really panicked. It's so funny.

The latest obsession is coloring. I hear "cola" multiple times a day. She prefers if Brady and I will color with her and honestly she can't be trusted to color on her own. I've found too many chewed crayons.

Evie stopped drinking bottles within the past month. She was drinking 6-7 oz of milk every night. I thought this was going to be a battle to give it up, but she suddenly lost interest. That was the easiest transition. Now, she has a sippy cup of milk when read books, but she usually only takes 1-2 drinks.

We're still working on learning colors. Currently, everything is either yellow or blue. Evie is also starting swim lessons on Saturday. I know she'll love it, but I actually think Brady and I are more excited.

Eighteen Months

There have been so many changes in the past two months, I don't know where to begin...
Her vocabulary has boomed. I can't even list all her words. Her pronunciation has also really improved. She says "love you," which is sounds like lellow, but it's the sweetest thing. I think my favorite thing this past month has been Evie learning her name. My heart bursts when she says "Ebie" and points to herself💛

Evie is obsessed with dogs, babies, and shoes. Brady and I always leave our running shoes at the front door. She either tries to put them on herself or bring them to us. She can pronounce "shoes" very well now that she says it about 30 times every day.

She also likes to identify anything that has the potential to be hot. If it's not cold, it's hot according to Ev. She holds her hand out and says "hot" to nearly everything. We're teaching her identify things that are actually hot - fireplace, oven, candles, etc.

She has a newfound love for Elmo or as Evie would say "Melmo." Her toothbrush has Elmo on it and Brady taught her the name. She started saying "Melmo" constantly so we've tried watching Sesame Street a few times. So far, she only lasts 2-5 minutes before she's bored.

She also recently got into wearing bandaids. She'll say "owie" repeatedly until we put a bandaid on her wrist. I only got this 18-month photo because I let her wear a bandaid and shoes😂

Evie is starting to learn colors. Currently, she thinks everything is "lellow" but we're working on it. She's also learning to count. She counts 1, 2, 3 then jumps.

She loves bathtime. She can easily spend an hour in the tub and she'll still cry when we take her out.

She has nearly all her teeth. I think we're only waiting for second molars. Canines came in much easier than I expected.

She's definitely getting more attached to Brady and I. She likes to be held and carried everywhere, but she still has no problem stalking strangers. It's really annoying at the park. She'll walk up to anyone and stand in their personal space just starring. Brady and I argue over who has to go get her and talk to said stranger lol

Sixteen Months

Evie at sixteen months can be summed up as a little firecracker with major FOMO.

She still has no stranger danger. I lost track of how many people held her when we were on vacation. She runs up to strangers with a big smile and open arms. She lures them in by waving and blowing kisses. It has become alarming. We have to keep a very close eye on her, especially in busy places like airports.

With that same thought, she has become so quick on her feet! A toddler that loves strangers and running is scary😳 She runs everywhere. I actually have to put forth effort to keep up with her. She still wants to be picked-up constantly, but when she's down, she's running.

She's a great sleeper for us, but refuses to nap at daycare. She usually clocks 12 hours at night (7-7) and takes two naps (1.5 hours) when she's home. At daycare, she seriously naps for 20 minutes😒 Her FOMO kicks into high gear and she wakes before everyone else and waits for them to wake up.

Her vocabulary has really taken off. Here are all of her words...
Mama
Dada
Nana
Bompa (grandpa)
Baba (for baby and bottle)
Ball
Dada (for doggy)
Ruff
Moo
Uh-oh
Thank you
Peek-a-boo
No, no, no (with a finger shake)
Hi
Buh-bye
Uppy is the latest word, but we can't figure out what it means (it's not up)

Evie's mouth is full of words and teeth! She just got two canines (top and bottom left) and one molar in the past couple weeks. She only needs two more canines and her second molars to complete her set of baby teeth.

This girl won't stop growing! She had a check-up on Monday and she's now 90th percentile for height (2' 8.4") and weight (26 lbs 3 oz)! She's always been 50th percentile so that was a shock.

Evie is obsessed with doggies, climbing (on everything), chocolate milk and her pink tricycle. We have to point out every dog we see on our walks. She has finally worked up the courage to start petting the dogs. She has also started crying next to her pink trike every night until we take her for a walk with it. It's pretty annoying and I blame Brady's brother because this was Christmas gift from them.

Fourteen Months

This is still my favorite stage! Toddlers are so fun. No one ever tells you that. I was terrified of the toddler stage when Evie was a baby. I thought it would be horrible, but so far it's pretty great (except when traveling)!

This girl is walking all over the place. She started consistently walking at 13 months. She has gotten so steady on her feet. The walk gets better and better each week. She still reaches out to hold my hand when she's walking. It melts my heart. I know this won't last long.

Evie still has no stranger danger. People probably think we neglect her because she literally walks up to strangers and lifts her arms to be picked up. I think every single person at my grandpa's funeral held her. She's incredibly social. I don't know where this comes from... Brady and I are so anti-social😂

Evie has gotten two molars (both on the left side) in the past month. One broke through while we were in Iowa😒 as if traveling with a one-year-old wasn't hard enough. Her cheeks get bright red when she's teething, but only on the side of the new tooth. She's been handling these molars pretty well, but we've also been giving her ibuprofen when the cheeks get red.

Evie's vocabulary is expanding! She started saying "hi" and "uh-oh" in the past week. She has the sweetest little voice. Her version of "hi" has an extended "eee" at the end. "Hieee!"

She's still a great eater. She's willing to try everything once. Our weekly go-to foods are oatmeal, sweet potatoes, avocado, greek yogurt, hard boiled eggs, chicken, salmon, pasta, berries, kiwi, bananas. She is obsessed with fruit snacks. We've turned this snack into a scavenger hunt. She has to earn each fruit snack!

One of the best parts of having a toddler is the sleep! It's been so nice the past few months to have predictable sleeping patterns. She sleeps 12 hours every night and takes two naps during the day (usually 90 minutes each).

We've starting calling her Hurricane Evie. She leaves destruction everywhere she goes. She loves pulling her books off the shelf and emptying the kitchen cabinets. She also likes pulling the leaves off my plants. She's really into throwing things in the toilet😖 Brady's Apple Watch was the first item lol. I'm waiting for our toilet locks to arrive in the mail.

My mission for the next month is to wean the bottles. We tried stopping bottles at 12 months, but Evie was not drinking enough milk from her sippy cup. Also, we need to do something about these tantrums... how do you stop one-year-old tantrums?

One Year

I can't believe my baby is one-year-old. The year passed in the blink of an eye.
She's a playful little monkey. She likes to explore and play with people. She's less interested in her toys. She loves being upside down and prefers to to be chased around the house. She has a newfound interest in our closet. She sneaks away to hide behind Brady's clothes then waits for us to come find her. It's super cute, but I've started closing our bedroom door to prevent her from wandering off.

Evie is has become a lot more talkative. It's nonstop babble around our house. I can have a three minute conversation with her and not understand a word she's saying, but she really enjoys it. We're starting to introduce sign language. She hasn't signed anything yet, but she pays attention when we sign. We've only started with four words - water, milk, mommy, daddy.

She's taken her first steps, but it's walking yet. She always takes 1-2 steps then tumbles. Her primary mode of transportation is still crawling. She's started crawling on her feet sometimes. We call it her bear crawl and it's adorable.

She still sleeps 12 hours at night. Bedtime is still 7:00PM. She also takes three naps (approximately one hour each) during the day. I keep trying to adjust her schedule to two longer naps, but she's not having it.

This girl wants all the food. She's not picky. However, she does let us know when she's full by throwing her food on the floor😒 I keep Clorox wipes next to the kitchen sink now. I know I'll need to clean the floor after each meal. Chicken curry has become one of her favorite meals. I make it nearly every week. She also loves berries, clementines, greek yogurt, sweet potatoes. She had acai bowls and poke bowls and California and loved them.

One big change has been the transition to whole milk. I expected this to be difficult for her, but Evie likes whole milk. We intended to slowly wean her off breast milk, but she drank a full bottle of whole milk at daycare two weeks ago and didn't seem to notice (or care) that it was different. Now, I'm done pumping🙌 I'm still nursing her morning and night, but we'll wean these nursing sessions soon.

Molars still haven't broken through. It's been a long process. Her gums are very swollen. She's been handling teething really well this time around. We've only had a few bad nights.

Mother Load

Today I'm sharing our typical evening routine. It's changed quite a bit since having Evie and returning to work. Fortunately, I've switched to part-time. This has really helped improve my work-life balance, especially when Brady is traveling. Our routine is pretty consistent each day. It's a bit more streamlined when Brady is home and he can help with Evie.

4:00-4:30
Get off work and pick-up Evie from daycare.
4:30-5:00
Prep bottles - wash bottles and pump parts then fill and label bottles for tomorrow. I have to do this first because it's my least favorite task and I just want to get it over with.
5:00-5:30
Take Evie for a walk or go to the gym. I wish this happened every day, but it tends to be three days a week.
5:30-5:45
Feed Evie baby food. Brady and I like doing this together. Evie is the cutest (and happiest) when she's eating so we both like to take part.
5:45-6:15
Bath Evie then give her a baby massage and vitamin D drop. Get her dressed in jammies and a sleep sack and read her a book. Brady always does this part when he's home. I shower while he's getting Evie ready for bed.
6:15-7:00
Nurse then put Evie to bed.
7:00-9:00
Eat dinner then I have two hours to get things done (write blog posts, load the dishwasher, plan tomorrows outfit) and relax (drink tea, watch Netflix, read my book and listen to music).
9:00
Stretch then bedtime.

Five Months

Ok, time can slow down...
Evie is getting so big and there seems to be new developments daily. I know I say this every month, but this has been my favorite stage.

The biggest milestone has been teeth! Evie cut her first tooth at 18-weeks and the second at 20-weeks. Now, she's got two bottom teeth, but no sign of uppers. This girl is teething like a champ. We didn't even know it was happening until our daycare provider told us she had a tooth! She's been chewing on everything. She's fond of Nuby Teethers and anything else she can fit in her mouth😊

Evie started solids this past month. Our pediatrician recommends starting solids at 4-months. She gets solids once daily, around 5 PM (before her bath). So far, she's had rice cereal, avocado, squash, peas, banana, prunes. Squash was an epic fail - she threw it up in the bath. Bananas are the favorite so far.

We've been working on rolling and sitting up. She has started rolling from back to belly, but often gets her arm caught underneath her. She's getting pretty good at sitting upright. She can sit unsupported briefly before she topples forward. I think this has really helped reduce the spit-up - we're only going through one burp cloth a day now🙌

Sleep has been much more predictable this past month. She always goes to sleep at 7 PM and wakes around 7 AM. She generally wakes up once between 1-2 AM for a feed and diaper change. She usually naps three times a day for 1-2 hours. However, she struggles to nap at daycare.

Evie visited some exciting places in the past month. She went to Montana last week, spent the 4th of July weekend at the cabin, and had her first trip to the pool. She loves to people-watch and play peek-a-boo. Thankfully, no stranger danger yet.

Weekend Update

Happy 4th of July!

We spent Friday night and Saturday at the cabin and had a great time. It's very different than previous trips to the cabin now that we're toting two babies around😳 but still fun! The weather, food, games, and company were👌
LOVE sitting around the fire at night with this group and this view!
No idea what we're talking about, but some the facial expressions Brady captured were priceless
Testing out Blair's toys in the morning
Coffee and Exploding Kittens = perfect start to the AM
Quickly switch over to Moscow Mules...
... and have Pops hold my baby while I drink!
This is the life
Load up the boat
Paddleboard and rowboat out the the boat
Everyone trying on Brent's sunglasses
My favorite part of summer. GT's, sun, boat, and this girl!
Check out that farmer's tan. You can take the boy out of Iowa...
Rowing back the cabin with Mt Rainer in the background
Mimi and Pops took the girls (and Bosco) for a walk while we were boating
Sunday, on the other hand, was awful. I got the flu😷 I can't remember the last time I had a fever, but it's so much worse now with having Evie. I didn't touch her at all on Sunday or Monday and handled her very little on Tuesday. Fingers-crossed she doesn't get it. I'm feeling better now, just lethargic.

It's Been A Rough Week

Poor Evie...

Her first tooth came in on Monday😩  I didn't even know she was teething! Our daycare provider told me she had a (bottom) tooth and I didn't believe it. I felt ridiculous for not noticing. She had been drooling a lot and chewing on everything, but teething was not on my radar because she's only 18-weeks! I'm not ready for this!

Then, she woke up on Tuesday with rash around her armpits and neck. She didn't seem bothered by it so we took her to daycare. Two hours later they called and said it spread all over her body. We took her to the pediatrician and found out she has a viral exanthem😒  This girl just can't catch a break.
Fortunately, I had Wednesday off. She took extra long naps and we spent a good portion of the day snuggling and reading books... silver lining.

Mother Load

I finally reached my pre-pregnancy weight. It feels great, but I still have a lot of toning to do.

My goal was to fit in my regular pants by the time I returned to work. I went back at 14-weeks postpartum and (thankfully) I did not have to buy new pants🙌 I've been tracking my weight loss and postpartum milestones in my journal because I knew I would be curious about this in the future. It's also been a good source of motivation. There's nothing worse than writing down the same weight two weeks in a row.

I gained 37 lbs. during my pregnancy. I lost 17 lbs. within the first week. I was feeling pretty good, but then the weight loss halted. It didn't just melt away with nursing like I was hoping. Diet and exercise were crucial to my weight loss.

I did my first workout at 17-days postpartum. It was just an arm circuit, but it felt great. The next day I felt ready for cardio - 2 miles on the elliptical. I worked out 3 times a week (walking, elliptical, circuits) until week 5.

We went to California week 4-5. I felt disgusting. I was wearing shorts and swimsuits and that was all the motivation I needed. I did my first postpartum run in San Diego. I ran 2 miles and it felt incredible! I was very sore afterwards, but the best kind of sore. I worked out every day from that point until my hip surgery (week 10). I used the Kayla Itsine's Bikini Body Guide for circuits 3 days a week and I ran the other 4 days of the week.

In addition to my exercise regimen, I was very strict with my diet. I kept a food journal, tracked my water intake, and started cooking. I focused on incorporating whole-grain carbs, lean protein and healthy fats... it's been a lot of oatmeal, avocado toast, salmon, chicken, eggs, quinoa, salads, sweet potatoes, berries, and protein shakes.

Since having hip surgery at 10-weeks postpartum the only workouts I've been able to do are walking, arms, and abs. I feel like I've lost a lot of muscle, but I've been warned (numerous times) by my ortho to take it slow. I'm desperate to go for a run again😩 For now, I continue to focus on my diet -"eat lean and clean" is my new mantra.

Here's how the weight came off...
Here are some of favorite things to eat...
Overnight oats - 1/2 C oats, 1/2 C coconut milk, 1 tbsp chia seeds, 1/2 banana, cinnamon, maple syrup and fruit on top
Avocado, egg, sriracha on whole-grain toast
Protein shake - ice, coconut milk, one scoop protein powder, 1 tbsp almond butter, 1tbsp chia seeds, 1 banana
Roasted chicken, sweet potatoes, broccoli, tomatoes, cucumbers
Favorite on-the-go snacks are kombucha, snapea crisps, Larabars, almonds, tuna packets
